The Brighton Sea Life Centre first opened its doors in 1872. Originally known as the Brighton Aquarium, the building itself is a marvel of Victorian architecture. As you explore the centre, admire the beautiful Victorian arcade with its intricate details and historic charm. SEA LIFE Brighton was conceived and designed by Eugenius Birch, the architect responsible for the West Pier. Work began in 1869 and the aquarium opened in 1872 making it the oldest continually operating aquarium in the world, featuring 5,500 mesmerising creatures including Rays, Sharks, Turtles, Terrapins, Star Fish, Seahorses and an Anaconda!
In May 2019 SEA LIFE Brighton launched a UK first exhibit, Day & Night, where guests can experience the wonderful oceans by day and by night. The £2.7 million refurbishment took 8 months and has enjoyed national recognition since its launch. Day & Night offers guests the chance to experience the 24-hour wonder of a coral reef as it moves through the day in a 750,000-litre display. Dance along the bio-florescent tropical shore and marvel in the beauty of coral reefs. Understand the amazing underwater phenomenon that makes some sea creatures and life forms glow. Explore the caves of the deep and imagine yourself as a lionfish. Journey through the underwater tunnel or marvel at the floor to ceiling NEW viewing window and wave hello to the Sharks, Rays and Tropical Fish! PLUS welcome back SEA LIFE Brighton’s much loved Green Turtles Lulu & Gulliver! The centre can now also boast as having the UK's largest collection of Sharks & Rays all under one roof!
Visitors can also enjoy spectacular interactive experiences, such as touching a starfish in the rockpools or learning about the creatures through talks and feeding demonstrations. Furthermore, the centre features a special exhibit dedicated to seahorses, where you can observe these beautiful, delicate creatures up close. Or discover the Rainforest Adventure and wind through the roots and tree trunks encountering rescued terrapins and their friends. Or why not take a ride on the Glass Bottom Boat Experience and see amazing ocean creatures from a new perspective, totally unique to SEA LIFE Brighton. Glide over the water and say hello to inquisitive turtles and sharks whilst marine experts explain what makes them so weird and wonderful!
