Opened on the 4th August 1883 by Magnus Volk, a pioneering electrical engineer, the railway became the first electric railway in the United Kingdom and is the world’s oldest operating electric railway in the world. Magnus Volk drew inspiration from the success of electric trams and envisioned a similar system for transporting people along Brighton’s seafront. The railway quickly became a popular attraction, captivating both local residents and tourists alike.  It now runs for just over a mile between Brighton Pier and Black Rock. Passengers can enjoy stunning sea views and see many of Brighton’s famous landmarks along the way including the Brighton i360 and the famous Palace Pier. The journey is a relaxing and enjoyable experience and is perfect for families.

There are three stations along the mile-long beachfront line and every one offers something different.

Aquarium Station - The flagship station and home to the railway’s visitor centre and the tantalizing Milk Bar Café. Positioned right on the beach and close to the heart of the city, Aquarium Station offers unparalleled convenience, with a mere 2-minute leisurely walk separating it from the iconic Brighton Palace Pier and famous Sea Life Centre.

Halfway Station - There’s lots to do around Halfway Station from the children’s playground, café and Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf.

Black Rock Station - Situated at the eastern end of the line, Black Rock Station offers convenient access to a variety of attractions, including the vibrant Brighton Marina, teeming with shops, cafes, restaurants and cinema.

All the stations have a wonderful traditional seaside feel, having been carefully preserved over the years, with many of the original features still in place. The railway is a popular attraction today and carries thousands of passengers each year. It’s a fun and educational experience, a perfect trip for families, those who have a passion for Brighton’s history, an enthusiasm for trains or for those who simply want to sit back and enjoy the stunning views.
