Helm Gallery

Helm Gallery offers an unconventional take on the bar experience - being that it is primarily a working commercial gallery, showcasing artists - both local talents and world-renowned names. Helm is trying to shake things up a little, offering a more expansive platform for Brighton’s creative community, artists and collectors alike.

Co-Founder Luke Davis describes Helm Gallery as a place where artwork is “actually enjoyed” rather than simply displayed. The gallery spans two floors, where the ground floor hosts a carefully curated rotating selection of limited edition prints and originals, while downstairs is the event space for a variety of workshops, shows and experiences.

In 2024, they held ‘Work in Progress’, where they invited their artists to work directly inside the gallery before a live audience of visitors, with the aim of demystifying the painting process, both through seeing the piece physically emerge and through conversation with the artists themselves.

Helm has an ethos of greater inclusivity within the art world - engaging with art can be daunting and there’s a real air of exclusivity that’s hard to get around - the average person doesn’t necessarily feel all too welcome in art spaces. This gallery is actively taking a stance against this, and the bar is an invitation to step inside and linger.

Every Friday is ‘Take the Streets’: from 6pm you can enjoy live DJ sets and even grab a tattoo, amid the stylish backdrop of the contemporary art scene. The cocktails are as fresh and stylish as the venue, with non-alcoholic and even CBD selections.

Even the design of the menu itself is a testament to Helm, as the drinks and snacks lists are sandwiched between artists’ biographies and a glossary of art terms.

Helm is definitely one to watch within Brighton’s cultural scene, and well worth a visit.
