Pink Moon

Tucked away in the curve of Ship Street, Pink Moon is Brighton’s newest hidden gem and it’s downright cool. Owners Jake and Jordan have invested heaps of tender loving care into curating this independent haven as a celebration of Brighton’s creative community - and it shows. Cosy and unpretentious with a warm welcome, the ambience is unparalleled.
Pink Moon came about out of pure nostalgia for an era in Brighton’s music scene that at one point, seemed to be slipping out of reach- but there’s a new wave emerging, and Pink Moon is leading the charge. Their manifesto is about giving back - hosting gigs, offering up walls as an exhibition platform for local artists, and providing space for workshops; acting as a creative vessel for anyone and everyone.
Grab a luxurious lavender matcha latte (highly recommend), browse some records, and head to the spacious suntrap patio out back. Don’t skip out on the house-made plant-based dim sum, or a yummy vegan pastry as you do - the food is fantastic. Whether you’re here to mellow out in the evening or just get some work done during the day, Pink Moon is a love letter to the best parts of Brighton.

Komodo Coffee

19a Brighton Square, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN1 1HD
Komodo Coffee is smack bang in the middle of The Lanes and it packs a punch despite its compact size. Inspired by owner James’ love of coffee, music, and good vibes, Komodo is cohesively chic from cup to character. Don’t be fooled, it’s certainly not style over substance - it really covers all bases.
The coffee itself originates from a friendship with José de León Guzmán, founder of Kofra, a renowned roaster with a Michelin-star background. This partnership has blessed Brighton with a coffee shop that balances relaxed cosiness with top-tier cups of joe. Cool down with a bright and fruity cold brew, chat about the finer points of coffee culture with the super friendly baristas, and enjoy the bespoke playlists - James is generous enough to share the spotify links on Komodo’s website.

Table @ The Secret Garden

Bristol Gardens, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN2 5JE
The Secret Garden in Kemptown is a wonderful volunteer run, community garden with a rich history - in the 1800’s, the grand houses in Sussex Square were all connected to their respective walled gardens via tunnel systems. The Secret Garden is the final remnant of this era, lovingly conserved by the Trustees of the Regency Society.
The Regency Society was founded by author, historian and conservationist, Antony Dale, who purchased The Secret Garden in 1950. It was his widow, Yvonne Dale, who entrusted the garden to the Regency Society, and together they elected that it should be preserved as a pleasure garden, championing the cultural and artistic history of our city.
Today, The Secret Garden acts as an outdoor gallery to a rotating selection of sculptural artists, a community hub for a variety of local charities, a home to a delightful family of foxes, and host to Table Brighton - who bake the most delicious cakes. There’s a variety of affordably priced tea and coffee to enjoy - the blackcurrant and blueberry tea pairs very well with the carrot cake. Family and dog-friendly, The Secret Garden is a hidden oasis. Just be sure to check out their opening times online first - typically they’re only open on Sundays and bank holidays, April through September.

Oui Crêperie

30 Grand Parade, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN2 9QA
Oui Crêperie has been a familiar face around Brighton for the past two decades, and that longevity is for good reason - their crêpes and galettes are phenomenal.
The cafe had humble beginnings breaking bread between friends; owners’ Judy and Arnold were making use of their nifty new crêpière at a party, inspired by their time in France, when they realised they could be on to something. Good ingredients and good company make for a great meal.
From local food festivals, to a lovely little Citroën H Van, and then another, and then a converted horse trailer, to finally finding a gorgeous Georgian home-base, the pair have gone from strength to strength. Their fleet of vans are still on the move at festivals and private events, while their charming little cafe holds residence at 30 Grand Parade.
Oui Crêperie has a real commitment to good food - fresh, ethically sourced ingredients, Sussex-roasted Craft House specialty coffee, vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free availability, plus your crêpe or galette is made from scratch right before your eyes, with all the love and care of a home-cooked meal. Highly recommend you stop by.

Red Fish

7 Trafalgar St, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN1 4EQ
Red Fish is an art cafe with a heartbeat. Enjoy a warm welcome from the staff, have a yummy freshly-baked sweet treat, a hot toastie, and a luxurious Vietnamese coffee and get to drawing - each table is kitted out with crayons, pencils and paper. Adorned in artwork, the walls are a patchwork ode to the imagination and skill of patrons past.
Overall, it’s a super cosy spot - jazz music, vibrant decor and funky hand made crockery with a high quality, diverse menu with a fantastic gluten-free and vegan selection. Situated at the top of Brighton’s North Laines on Trafalgar Street, it’s the perfect place to catch a break from the city bustle.
Equipped with their own kiln, Red Fish hosts evening pottery workshops - a good excuse for a much-needed return trip to collect your pottery once it’s fired!

Coffee at 33

33 Trafalgar St, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN1 4ED
Clearly, this is a coffee shop that’s all about the coffee. Coffee At 33 is decoratively minimalist but entirely unpretentious - simply, there’s no need for showmanship when you’re at the top of your game. Coffee at 33 serves no-nonsense, specialty, house-roasted coffee. There’s a regular clientele that keep coming back for a reason.
I have to speak personally, here - that coffee transported me. Perhaps the understated backdrop left room for the imagination, but sitting there on a coffee sack cushion sipping hot hand brew in the height of a British heatwave, I was suddenly a teenager again, tasting coffee for the first time in the Costa Rican jungle. The flavour evolved as if it knew it was taking me on a journey. It was exceptional.

Presuming Ed

114-115, London Rd, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN1 4JG
If you’re looking for something a little off-the-wall, Presuming Ed’s Bar & Coffee House is an independent Brighton staple - quirky, punk, inclusive and eclectic. Just around the corner from Brighton Open Market on London Road, it’s a great excuse to venture further afield from the typical tourist hot-spots and get deeper insight into what Brighton is all about. Step inside and feast your eyes - Ed’s is a maximalist paradise of street art, strangeness and undeniable character.
But it's not all style—Presuming Ed’s serves up quality coffee and a good range of pastries, cakes, sandwiches and tasty toasties at affordable prices. It’s a favourite haunt for students, creatives, and remote workers, thanks to its friendly staff and quality free Wi-Fi. It’s also packed with things to do. Presuming Ed’s - originally a bank - houses one of Britain’s oldest bank vaults, now refurbished into a surprisingly challenging but very enjoyable escape room. If that’s not your thing, there’s a dedicated games room including a toad table and a huge variety of board games.

Parked on our lively St James’s Street in Kemptown, My Coffee Story is a quiet classic, a proper locals’ favourite that lets the coffee and cakes do the talking - an absolute must-visit if you have a sweet tooth.
The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming - but cosy, with a gentle hum of regulars coming and going. The coffee is top quality and always served with a smile… but the real winner is the bakery.

Kenny’s Rock and Soul Cafe

1A Kensington Gardens, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN1 4AL
Kenny’s is a fantastic antidote to the hubbub of Kensington Gardens below - ascend from the chaos of the North Laines and watch it all happen from Kenny’s balcony. It’s the perfect vantage point to drink in that iconic, vibrant atmosphere that draws people to Brighton, without feeling swept up by the buzz.
Kenny’s has the groovy, relaxed, retro vibe of a classic diner, with homage to rock and soul music legends across the decor and playlist. The cafe itself spans two floors - there’s a street-level seating area next to the main entrance should you want to feel a little more involved; follow the colourful winding staircase up to the main cafe and balcony.
There’s an extensive, affordable menu offering generously portioned, traditional greasy-spoon grub, done well - English breakfasts, burgers, jacket potatoes, genuinely fresh salad and good coffee. The home-made smoothies and milkshakes really top it off. Phase out the crowds and tune in to Kenny’s.
