Theatre Royal Brighton
Constructed in just 10 months and opened in 1807, Theatre Royal Brighton has been entertaining audiences for over two centuries - making it one of the oldest theatres in the UK (and it’s in good company).
This Grade II* listed building has had an illustrious history since its Regency origins, when George, Prince of Wales - later Prince Regent, and then King George IV - took to Brighton as a seaside home-away-from home. This, alongside the popularity of ‘sea bathing’ as a health remedy, skyrocketed the population over a 50 year period from just 3,620 inhabitants in 1786 to 40,634 in 1831.
The Theatre Royal is an enduring figurehead from Brighton’s origins as an exciting seaside resort, endorsed by the Prince Regent himself.
Nowadays, it’s owned by ATG Entertainment, who have 72 venues across the UK, USA and Europe, making them one of the most prolific producers of live-theatre worldwide.
Many of the shows are hot off the West End, or previewing ahead of a London run - Theatre Royal Brighton has hosted performances from countless leading actors and actresses - Rowan Atkinson, Rupert Everett, Dawn French, Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart, Zoë Wanamaker and Dominic West, to name just a few.
It’s not just theatre though: every year at the Theatre Royal, ATG’s Creative Learning programme puts on over 150 workshops, talks, tours and events for people of all ages, from all backgrounds.
All in all, the Theatre Royal is a vibrant and enduring landmark at the heart of Brighton’s rich cultural history, continuing to delight and entertain thousands of visitors annually.
