A Hangover Guide to Oxford

Don’t get confused with the chain of brasserie-and-bars: this is a fab independent café in a corner of the Covered Market, which can provide your aching head with a much-needed fry up – worthy even of the ‘Fry Up Police’ Facebook page some might say…! Their bacon-and-egg baps are just what’s needed to make those slightly nauseous feelings fade right away; and they aren’t too pricey either, which is always a bonus.

George St Social

Since being completely renovated a couple of years ago, this newly-chic café-cum-restaurant has become increasingly popular with students and residents alike. With a huge variety of hot drinks available, there’s everything from coffees to teas to hot chocolates, complete with syrups to spice things up, and pastries galore. If you’ve had a particularly crazy Friday or Saturday evening, then why not check out their ‘Bottomless Brunches’ from 11am-4pm every weekend. For £20 per person you can get any item on their extensive ‘Brunch’ menu plus bottomless Bloody Marys or Proseccos. If ‘hair of the dog’ is your hangover ethic, this is the one for you.

(WARNING: You can only stay at your ‘Bottomless Brunch’ for two hours max. Drink responsibly, but with haste, if you want your money’s worth)

News Café

For those preferring something slightly less fancy for their delicate head, the News Café is a lovely down-to-earth establishment serving slap-up all-day breakfasts (veggie and meat), and – as the name suggests – with all the daily newspapers there for you to peruse and try to vaguely get your brain back in gear. Spacious, light, not-too-crowded, and just off the Cornmarket in the centre of town, it’s a great way to slowly ease yourself back into the real world, with the help of lots of toast and tea.

Headington Market & Gloucester Green Market

This is not one for those with a delicate stomach; these markets are packed to the guts with delicious smells and aromas of all different types of food. If your hangover allows you out of bed, this is the place to go to line your stomach. Headington Market is open on Saturday mornings only, whilst Gloucester Green is open Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. With freshly prepared curries, stir-fries, paellas, doughnuts, and more, you can’t go wrong heaving yourself out of bed, putting on a pair of sunglasses, and grabbing some hearty takeout food here. And if you’re really not feeling like facing the day ahead, you can just take it right back to your room! It’s a win-win situation.

Headington Farmers’ Market runs every Saturday 10am-2pm, at the top of New High Street. Gloucester Green Market runs every Wednesday and Thursday 9am-4pm and every Saturday 10am-5pm.

Fresh Air

Christ Church Meadows

Maybe food isn’t really your thing. If you just need a little stroll to clear your head, head down to Christ Church Meadows. Although it’s often pretty crowded with tourists, the meadows are a lovely spot to walk round with friends and give each other the lowdown of what went on last night. If that late-night Snapchat was just too embarrassing to live down, pull your hood up, plug your headphones in, and take a solo amble next to the river to get away from real life for a bit. Port Meadow is also great for this, and often less busy too!

We can’t lie; this one’s not for us. Running a 5k the morning after? No thank you. But if you happen to be one of those incredibly athletic and wholesome people, we salute you. ParkRun is a scheme happening all over the country, where runners of all levels, shapes and sizes get together on a Saturday at 9am in a local park to run, jog, or even walk 5k. It’s currently running – if you’ll pardon the pun – at Cutteslowe and Sunnymead Park every week, and there’s a post-run meet-up at the park café for coffee and cakes afterwards. It’s totally free, but you have to register online before going. Organised completely by volunteers, however slow you are, they promise always to be the last to finish, so really don’t worry about pacing it. Just slowly jog your way back into the land of the living and banish the fug from your mind.

ParkRun happens every Saturday at 9am at Cutteslowe and Sunnymead Park.

Botanical Gardens

If that last option made you literally want to gag, but you still want to get outdoors, maybe try out the Oxford Botanical Gardens. They’re the oldest botanical gardens in Britain, so you can feel like you’ve accomplished something just by visiting. It’s relatively compact, so won’t take up too much time, but is still a relaxed way to fritter away a morning; and it’s near the centre of town, so there are plenty of coffee shops nearby to top up on caffeine or smoothies for that extra kick.

Staying In


Literally cannot move from your bed/sofa? No worries, we’ve all been there. There are the usual chain restaurants to order from – GBK, Thaikhun, Papa John’s, etc – plus some great independent options on offer as well, including Chinese at Dragon Bowl, and Indian at Malikas. So if you’re just too delicate to venture out into the world, go ahead and keep those PJs on, switch on Netflix, and order some comfort food right to your door. We fully support your decision.
