7 Meat-Free Eateries for World Vegan Day

1 November 2018 | Rosa Johnston-Flint

Whatever culinary clan you belong to, these restaurants will have you rejoicing that World Vegan Month starts today...

The Hug and Pint, Glasgow
According to a recent survey, Glasgow has the highest number of vegans in the UK, beating Edinburgh and Brighton & Hove. So let's start with the newly crowned 'Glas-vegan' capital, where The Hug and Pint serves modern, creative vegan cuisine and is also a live music venue, making it a must for meat-free music-lovers.

Make No Bones, Sheffield
This street food kitchen is located in Church, which recently set up in the listed Osborn Works in Sheffield's Kelham Island. It’s worth a visit for the beautiful vegan dishes, but also offers an arcade bar and a tattoo parlour – it’s a unique venue that you won’t want to miss. Confusingly the vegan menu lists meat items without quirky name changes, but rest assured it is 100% vegan (as is the bar!)

V-Rev, Manchester
This delicious diner won a PETA award this year for ‘Best VFC’ (that’s Vegan Fried Chicken!) Also on the menu, fast food favourites like burgers, “mac ‘n’ cheez” and hotdogs. In true fast-food fashion, this joint opens its doors 7 days a week, serving food until 9pm Sunday-Thursday and 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Suncraft, Bristol
This new kid on the block has only been around since the end of September, but Suncraft is already causing a stir on the Bristolian vegan scene. With beautiful presentation and several home-grown ingredients, which are literally grown in-house thanks to an innovative hydroponics system in the restaurant itself, you’ll be more than happy to watch what you eat here.

222 Vegan, London
This London eatery offers a buffet lunch (£9.50 takeaway) until 3.30pm and goes à la carte from 5.30pm. They offer fresh natural ingredients, non-GM and organic where possible, and use techniques “which preserve taste and nutritional value” and never involve deep-frying or microwaving. That’s a pretty guilt-free meat-free menu.
