Top 5 One Woman Shows at the Fringe 2017

Top 5 One Woman Shows at the Fringe 2017

7 August 2017 |

The Edinburgh Fringe kicked off on August 4, with previews from August 2. Here's our pick of this year's best one-woman shows heading to the Scottish festival.

1. Gutted - Liz Richardson

Gutted is a one-woman show based on the experiences of Liz Richardson, who was diagnosed with an inflammatory bowel disease in her early twenties.  A collaboration with Tara Robinson, the show aims to challenge the taboo against the disease.

Throughout the performance, Richardson adopts a number of characters, ranging from Nurse Whale to Doctor Goodhands, but opts out of playing herself.  Blending wry toilet humour with a sharp script and engaging performance, Gutted is not one to miss.

Gutted is at Pleasance Dome, Edinburgh, until 13 August.

2. Fleabag – Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Following its hit BBC success, Fleabag, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s play about a young woman, returns to the place it first begun, Edinburgh Fringe.  In the words of the show’s anti-heroine, “today I am going to be a new person.  No more slutty pizzas.  Not more porny wanks.  Lots more lovely threesomes.  Go!”

Fleabag is at George Square, Edinburgh, between 21- 27 August.

3. Ladsladslads – Sara Pascoe

Feeling drunk and lonely? You’re not alone.  Award-winning comedian and star of Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week, QI and Taskmaster, returns to Edinburgh with a brand new stand-up show.  Expect big questions, hilarious confessions and a fine dash of British self-deprecation, courtesy of Sara Pascoe.

Ladsladslads is at Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh, between 2 - 27 August.

4. Richard III - Kolbrún Björt Sigfúsdóttir

Back by popular demand for one week, director Kolbrún Björt Sigfúsdóttir and actor Emily Carding invite you to take part in Richard’s court, with their award-winning rendition of Richard III (a One-Woman Show).   Pushing the boundaries of Shakespearan performance, 'Richard III' subverts the audience’s expectations like no other.

Richard III is at The Royal Scots Club, Edinburgh, between 15-19 August.

5. Woman on Fire - John Woudberg

This explosive one-woman show takes you to the heart of the action in the life of one of Edwardian England’s most fanatical and dangerous women – Mrs Edith Rigby.  A key player in the suffragette movement, Rigby was a pivotal part of the violence of its unfolding. Woman on Fire, a play performed by actor Claire Moore, seeks to shed light on mysterious vandal, arsonist and suffragette bomber that is Edith Rigby.
