Panto season is upon us!

14 December 2018 |

(Oh yes it is!) Here are some traditional – and not so traditional – takes on this cultural Christmas staple.

Dick Whittington, Theatre Royal Windsor
Celebrating 80 years of panto this December, the beautiful Theatre Royal Windsor welcomes one of the most pun-tastic pantomimes out there: Dick Whittington! Follow Anita Harris, Basil Brush and Marti Webb to London, where you'll meet not only the Queen but all kinds of quintessential pantomime chaos! With songs, jokes and fun for all the family, you're sure to Carry On laughing for hours...

A Pair of Pantos, The Marlborough Theatre in Brighton
This is a trans-positive, all-gender-inclusive, queer pantomime mash-up for the whole family – and all families! Times are hard and Jack is hungry, and so are Jack’s dads. Jack has a fantastic idea for making money but things start to go wildly wrong when sneaky King Rat comes along. Nobody quite knows which pantomime they’re in, and on top of all this, Jack is trying to get to the bottom of what underwear is right when you’re non-binary. Expect twists and turns, laughs and loopholes, confusions and connections in this fizzy and funny fight for family, identity and fairness.

Tickets are £10 for adults, £8 for children, or £30 for a family ticket for 4 people.

Cinderella, New Victoria Theatre in Woking
When the villain is the headliner – you know you’re in for a spectacularly wicked treat! And few characters are more wicked than Cinderella’s Stepmother, played by Craig Revel Horwood, the infamously stringent judge of Strictly Come Dancing and ‘Miss Hannigan’ in Nikolai Foster's recent smash hit production of Annie. The stellar line-up also includes much-loved children’s comedian Paul Chuckle, so plenty of laughs alongside the boos and hisses.

Oedipuss in Boots, Wardrobe Theatre in Bristol
Fast, smart and devilishly funny, Oedipuss In Boots puts the romp in anthropomorphism. An original dark comedy from The Wardrobe Theatre (makers of Reservoir Mogs, Rocky Shock Horror, Goldilock, Stock & Three Smoking Bears, Nachos, Kirk Vs Ming and Muppits Die Hard) jam-packed with big laughs, puppetry, dance routines, musical numbers and unforgettable drama. Oedipuss In Boots is the ultimate Greek tragedy and the original mother-loving pantomime!

Cinderella: A Wicked Mother of a Night Out! UK tour
Taking the term ‘pub theatre’ literally, Cinderella is an outrageous site-specific show that takes all the best of traditional British panto and tops it off with a pint. Penned by Luke Barnes (All We Ever Wanted Was Everything), this knees-up of a night out brings together the characters you know, love and hate, to pull your mates, spill your pints and pour their hearts out on the Karaoke. Crammed with live music, bingo, massaoke, and a touch of midnight magic, Cinderella will have you dancing in the aisles and laughing your bloody baubles off. Think Tarantino meets Shameless, meets ELF... all in a real, local boozer.
