Pick your own pumpkin!

25 October 2018 | Emily May

Getting your pumpkin from a supermarket isn’t a patch on picking one. So why not get pumped for Halloween by carving out an autumnal adventure for yourself and visiting one of the premier pumpkin patches in the UK. PS: Sorry about all the word play, but after all, we are the pun-kings (okay, we’ll stop now).

Farmer Copley’s, Yorkshire
What better way to start our round up than with the farm that hosts the largest pumpkin festival in the UK!? Farmer Copley’s, a family owned farm experience in Pontefract, will be hosting its very own Halloween spectacular on select dates throughout October, giving you the chance to pick, celebrate, carve and eat pumpkins. There will be thousands to choose from, as they have planted in excess of 120,000 plants in a range of colours – who knew that you could get red, green, blue and black pumpkins? Turns out you don’t need to buy a bag of skittles to taste the rainbow. And what festival would be complete without a few rides? After you’ve completed your Jack o’lantern, hop onto the farms Bucking Pumpkin, set off on their Tractor Barrell Ride, or, if fun fairs aren’t your thing, listen to stories told by the Not So Wicked Witch and her gaggle of comrades. You can even have your face painted so you can perfectly match your petrifying pumpkin creation.

Farmer Copley’s is located at Ravensknowle Farm, Pontefract Road, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, WF7 5AF. Their Pumpkin Festival will take place on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 – 31 October from 10am – 4pm. Admission is free. Booking not required.
Crockford Bridge Farm Shop, Surrey
Crockford Bridge in Surrey is a family owned farm, that allows you to pick your own seasonal vegetables during the summer. But obviously, in October, things get a bit more (pumpkin) spicy and exciting as their famous pumpkin patch opens for business. You’re in for double double, toil and and trouble if you head over in half, as the farm is putting on special events from pumpkin displays, onsite carving, games and other activities. There’s even a theatre show “Jack & Mr Beanz Stalk” situated in an immersive woodland theatre location. Who knows, if you have a great time, you might be back in a month or two to dig up your (WARNING: the dreaded C word is about to be used) Christmas tree and visit Father Christmas. You’ll be following in famous footsteps, as the farm has been visited by the cast of Made in Chelsea, the Apprentice, and has featured on various TV shows such as Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, The One Show and Saturday Kitchen.

Lester Farm, Kent
Fancy being a socially conscious pumpkin picker? Head to Lester Farm in Kent to collect some good karma as well as your Jack o’lantern, as all proceeds are being donated to two local charities, 21 Together and Hamstreet Academy & Nursery School, which were selected by a Facebook poll. Halloween’s freaky, but that doesn’t mean your morals have to be!

Undley Pumpkin Patch and Maize Maze, Suffolk
Halloween is taken spookily seriously at Undley Pumpkin Patch, as they are open throughout the month of October, offering the largest selection of pick your own pumpkins in Suffolk! They also host a plethora of Halloween activities, including performances and workshops from Fooldhardy Circus Entertainment, donkey rides, storytelling, face painting, and of course their famous Maize Maze, which this year is in the shape of a scarecrow. If you manage to emerge from the maze, you can reward yourself with one of the tasty refreshments on offer, many of which include a certain something as the main ingredient… I wonder what that could be?

Talking of refreshments…
If decorating pumpkins isn’t your thing, and you prefer carving when it leads to a tasty treat, why not use your freshly picked pumpkin to satisfy your stomach rather than adorn your doorstop? Try your hand at making some pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup, or even pumpkin curry. After you’ve tried them all, you'll be a plump-kin in no time!
