Frequently referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Lakes’, the historic market town of Kendal sits on the fringe of the Lake District. With rolling hills, cobbled alleyways and the stunning remains of Kendal Castle, there’s no shortage of awe-inspiring views in the Cumbrian town. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of places to grab a slap-up roast either. We’ve done the groundwork and selected the most delectable roast dinners available in Kendal – a place that offers so much more than its namesake Mint Cake.

Romneys

Romneys is the perfect post-hike refuel. The stone-built inn underwent a huge refurbishment a few years back and has since gone on to establish its foodie credentials, even bagging restaurant of the year in The Westmorland Gazette's prestigious 2014 competition. The gastro-pub boasts a wide choice of real ales and a wine list to match, with a Sunday Carvery setting you back just £9.95.

The Strickland Arms

Overlooking the entrance to historic Sizergh Castle, The Strickland Arms offers quite the view with its roast dinners. If you’re looking for a traditional pub with dark wood tables and a fireplace serving hearty, locally sourced dishes, this is the place for you. For a truly soul-warming dish, we recommend getting their Lancashire Hotpot. When in Rome…

The Hawkshead Brewery

With a wide range of events on throughout the week, including a weekly Sunday open mic night and brewery tours, The Hawkshead Brewery offers something for everyone and has become a favourite haunt amongst locals of all ages. As the name suggests, there’s a fantastic selection of ales ready for you to sample alongside a mouth-watering roast dinner with all the trimmings, served every Sunday. In true Northern style, the kitchen also serves up a great section of pies and a ‘Proper Shepherd’s Pie’. As you were.

The Sun Inn

With low-hanging wooden beams, exposed brick and a roaring fire, The Sun Inn ticks all the boxes for a quintessential countryside pub. Located between Kendal and neighbouring Crook, their kitchen boasts a selection of locally sourced meats, as well as the option to sample all three for £2.50 extra. What’s more, an extra jug of gravy is just £1, which in our books makes you eligible for a knighthood.

The recently refurbished The Heron serves up a brilliantly diverse menu. As well as pub staples such as fish ‘n’ chips and burgers, you can indulge in rag pudding, sirloin steak and deep fried brie. But it’s their roast that we’re interested in, and theirs is a corker. Served Sundays, 12pm-6pm, it starts at just £8.95.

The Heron is located at Esthwaite Ave, Kendal LA9 7PG.
