Winterproof Barbecues and Grills for Australia Day

11 January 2019 |

Pretty much everywhere does a good flat white these days – but where can you find a good winter barbie, to satisfy that Aussie Day itch? Get fired up for the big day (26th January) with our five favourite BBQs and grills.

Red’s True Barbecue, Manchester and various
The self-proclaimed “church of true barbecue” has branches in Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield – and with very delectable offerings for Veggies and Vegans too, it’s sure to look appetising to a lot of people. They’re kicking off 2019 with a 51% discount for anyone who pre-books a table. We like the sound of that, almost as much as we like the sizzle of meat hitting the grill…

Roth Bar & Grill, Bruton in Somerset
This culinary jewel in Somerset’s crown offers delicious menus that change daily, focussing on sustainable and seasonal produce from the adjacent Durslade Farm and their own Kitchen Garden; other ingredients are sourced from local, ethical producers. They serve burgers with home-cured bacon (£14) and an array of steaks – including the signature Tomahawk – and chops, which cost between £17-28. The veggie options are also pretty scrumptious, so it's well worth a visit for non-meat-eaters too...

Smokeworks, Cambridge
BBQ-lovers in Cambridge are spoilt for choice, with two branches of Smokeworks in the city. Heavily influenced by the Tex-Mex flavours of the US, their classic barbie food has been smoked, pulled, brined and seasoned to perfection, and comes paired with beer, bourbon and milkshakes. The selection of “Powerhouse Plates” come loaded with slow-cooked ribs and wings for £18-19 per person – except the “Actually, I’m Vegan” (£17) which includes crispy buffalo aubergine, courgette & chilli tostada, and sweet potato fries.

Smokeworks can be found at 1-3 Station Road CB1 2JB and 2 Free School Lane CB2 3QA

The Cauldron, Bristol
Toiling away in the St Werburghs area of Bristol, The Cauldron's emphasis is on providing ethically and locally sourced, delicious food. This is cooked using heirloom cookery methods from different cultures around the world – not technically a barbecue, but multiple fire pits, grills, a wood-fired oven, and (the name makes sense now) two huge cast iron cauldrons. The menu changes monthly, but you can expect charcoal-grilled steaks to set you back around £15 for something like a 200g Flat Iron and £18 for a 180g Sirloin.

The Cauldron is located at 98 Mina Road, St Werburghs, Bristol BS2 9XW

Smokeys, Brighton
Another slice of delicious, sticky, American barbecue can be found down in Brighton, where California coast meets British seaside. Anyone diners who like their food served with a challenge can take on the whopping “Blowout Platter” (£35.50 for two – or arguably a small army), which features a full selection of all their meats.
