Top Twinkling Trails to get you in the Christmas Mood

22 November 2018 |

You may think of dazzling city centres when you think of Christmas lights – but away from the hustle and bustle, some of the most "lit" (see what we did there?) experiences are to be found in forests and on country estates. Here’s our top 5…

Westonbirt Arboretum, near Bristol
Sparkle-seekers in the Southwest can head to Westonbirt, where breath-taking light spectacles and interactive displays bring the woods to life. Visitors can also enjoy fairground rides, arts and crafts, and angelic choirs at the ‘Christmas Village’. With 2,500 species of tree from all over the world, the arboretum plays a vital part in research and conservation – so why settle for a Christmas tree when you can have a Christmas forest?

Christmas at Bedgebury Pinetum, Kent
Yes – what could be more festive than trees, bedecked in light?! Bedgebury Pinetum is a conservation project for endangered tree species, with the world’s largest and most complete collection of conifers, including some that were relocated from the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew in 1925 (to escape London’s polluted air). This year, for the very first time, a one-mile path winds its way through a magical after-dark experience of dazzling light displays. All together now: "ahhhh..."

Blenheim Palace Illuminated Trail, near Oxford
You’d expect to find a few bright sparks in a University city like Oxford – and there are over a million northwest of the city, at beautiful Blenheim Palace. Their winter trail promises to be bigger and brighter than ever with pea-lights, lasers and projections. Highlights include a new Field of Light, scented Fire Garden, Canopy of Light, Singing Trees, and a Water Terrace Finale with water jets and projections.

Open from 23 November – 1 January 2019, 4:40-10pm. Last entry 8pm.

Christmas at Beaulieu, New Forest (near Southampton)
On selected dates between 23rd November – 24th December, the tree-tops will glisten at Beaulieu as part of a mile-long illuminated path sweeping through the grounds, under canopies drenched in seasonal colour. Venture outdoors for the perfect wholesome family activity – without skimping on timely treats like fairground rides, hot chocolate and mulled wine. LED-licious.

Twilight evenings, Chatsworth
Well worth finding your way to Chatsworth for their indoor trail extravaganza. Once the house closes to the public, ticket-holders can embark on a fairytale journey through this beautiful stately home, with live Christmas music, traditional bell ringers and a strings trio setting the scene as you explore. And be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the mischievous baby dragon…
