Richmond Park

Richmond Park is the largest of London's Royal Parks, a sprawling 2,500-acre expanse originally used as a hunting gound by King Henry VIII. Amazingly, some ancient trees from his time still stand, bearing silent witness to centuries of history. The park’s star residents are undoubtedly its 650 free-roaming deer, who make a majestic sight against the backdrop of rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and expansive grasslands.

A large herd of deer is resting and grazing on a lush green field with trees in the background. Some deer are lying down while others are standing or walking around. The scene is calm and serene, with a vast number of deer scattered across the landscape.

As well as being one of the best places in London to spot free-roaming deer, Richmond Park has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve - making it a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, from a range of different birds to creatures as small as the elusive stag beetle.

Richmond Park isn't just for nature enthusiasts, though; history buffs will find plenty to pique their interest. King Henry’s Mound offers a fascinating slice of history and an unexpected treat – a protected view of St. Paul’s Cathedral, perfectly framed through a strategic gap in the trees. For those seeking tranquillity, the Isabella Plantation is a must-visit. This 40-acre woodland garden bursts into a riot of colors with azaleas, rhododendrons, and camellias. Take a leisurely stroll or capture stunning photos of these vibrant blooms. Pembroke Lodge also provides a serene retreat; this Georgian mansion’s elegant tea rooms and picturesque gardens offer sweeping views over the Thames Valley, making it a perfect spot for afternoon tea.

Cycling aficionados can tackle the scenic Tamsin Trail, a 7-mile route that circles the park. Alternatively, explore the park’s vast landscapes on foot or horseback, or enjoy a round of golf.

Note: opening times are affected by annual deer culls which take place every year between November and February, for a period of up to 6 weeks.
