This year's Expanded strand presents an outstanding programme showcasing the very best in thought-provoking immersive experiences. From a programme of immersive and XR works exploring the intersection of healthcare and technology, to an installation set inside a shipping container and presented in near total darkness, to a visually stunning work at BFI iMax that combines AI with dance. LFF Expanded features works by some of the industry's most visionary artists and designers and excitingly, for the first time ever at the London Film Festival a selection of fun and creative video games.
Some of the works and events available for the public as part of LFF Expanded include:
Impulse: Playing with Reality (UK PREMIERE) - a mixed-reality work from UK studio Anagram, narrated by Tilda Swinton that playfully explores what it's like to live with ADHD.
The Great Endeavour (INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE) - an awe-inspiring cinematic experience from acclaimed artist/architect Liam Young, presented at Outernet, that envisions a future where we achieve planetary transformation through coming together to remove carbon from the atmosphere.
Last Minute (UK PREMIERE) - a hypnotising projection mapping installation from Adrien M and Claire B, which invites audiences to linger in the minute just before death and just before birth.
Superradiance. Embodying Earth (EUROPEAN PREMIERE) - a multiscreen video and sound installation from Memo Akten and Katie Peyton Hofstadter, presented at BFI IMAX, that combines AI with dance to provoke connections between audiences and global ecosystems.
Arcade - an installation from Darkfield set inside a shipping container and presented in near total darkness, which combines spatial sound with the nostalgic aesthetic of 1980s video games to explore the relationship between players and avatars.
In addition to the major installations, LFF Expanded will also present an exciting programme of FREE activity taking place at Bargehouse at Oxo Tower Wharf, in the heart of London’s South Bank. For the very first time video games will be showcased via an interactive Games Lounge, featuring five fun and creative projects for audiences to play for free. Some highlights include Playing Kafka and Paper Trail. The programme also includes exciting talks events, such as one led by Imogen Heap.
Tickets for Impulse, Last Minute and Arcade go on sale on Tuesday 17th September, with the rest of the Expanded programme being free to access.
