Husband-and-wife duo take on more themes of displacement, labour, and migration in their newest show at London's newest gallery space.
It’s an exciting month in the art world for a few reasons. The biggest fuel for our excitement is the announcement of a grand new gallery space in Central London. Ames Yavus launches a 2,6000square foot pad in the heart of Mayfair, the gallery’s first European base, poised to take off this year with a bold, extensive programme for 2025, with many renowned contemporary artists from the Ames Yavuz roster will be back for more. Starting with, Isabel & lfredo Aquizian’s Elipsis.
Filipino husband and wife duo Isabel and Alfredo Aquizian have for twenty years been refining their interrogations of displacement, migration, and exploitation in Southeast Asia, with a fascinating stylistic combination of materials and tools steeped in the agrarian traditions of the area, and through them displaying the excesses and processes of neo-liberal capitalism.
56 crowns designed and sculpted entirely out from recycled metal. A cardboard and wood lattice of discarded packaging, assembled to resemble and metropolitan sprawl. A series of large-scale wing structures, comprised of discarded metal. The Aquizian’s zero-waste approach turns the mundane stuff of life into the stuff of art, especially as the Southeast Asia region is especially susceptible to pollution from producing Western goods, and resultant climate change.
