Exquisite Noise is a timely new dance work by Van Huynh Company, with its London premiere at The Place on 10 October 2025. Drawing upon the art of assembly, Choreographer Dam Van Huynh celebrates the power of coming together through making noise. The work adopts sonic and visual noise as a form of activism. Van Huynh creates an overload of stimuli that reminds us of the precarity of our rights and abilities to speak up. When times feel hopeless, it is our ability to come together and make noise that gives us hope.

As a displaced person, whose family fled Vietnam during the war, Van Huynh is uniquely placed to offer his perspective on what it means to find hope in creating noise and assembling:

‘Noise belongs to everyone, and it has the capacity to disrupt and highlight important issues. I am thinking of Myanmar for example or the use of Cacerolazo in South American culture. I see our ability to assemble and call to action as what makes us unique, special and human. I am defining hope in this context as a reminder of what makes our society special in the UK. We honour our citizens with the rights and liberty to gather and unite in solidarity (even if we disagree) and even when the conversation is difficult. Exquisite Noise is a reminder for us allthat we must continue to have these hard discussions, bring issues to light, share our oppositional views if need be, and sometimes it may get and feel heavy but we will not shy away from standing up for what is special about our society.Dam Van Huynh

Exquisite Noise utilises noise in multiple facets to embody defiance, as a space for abandon and catharsis and to celebrate the power of coming together. This poignant piece draws upon Van Huynh’s interdisciplinary practice of ‘collaging’. This practice brings together movement, sound, light, objects and quotations from activists and artists. These voices include Robert Rauschenberg, Marina Abramovic, installation artist Allan Kaprow, noise performer Isak Hansen, and others that act as magnifying disruptors further amplifying a community of voices. Exquisite Noise celebrates the realisation that we are not alone; it pays tribute to the united voices throughout history that sparked debates and inspired change.
