The Flamenco Festival returns to London with some of the finest talent from Spain kicking up a storm.
The soul of Spain in the heart of London…
The Flamenco Festival is returning to London bringing a slice of Spanish culture to the city with its trademark brilliance in a wide-ranging programme including star dancer Sara Baras, as the Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary in style.
Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras opens the Festival with Vuela (meaning “fly”) performed with 12 exceptional musicians and dancers. It takes audiences on a choreographic journey of 15 unique pieces across four acts, each revolving around a different word: Wood, Sea, Death and Fly. Celebrated for her lightning-fast footwork, intricate hand, arm and body movements, as well as her captivating stage presence and choreography, Sara Baras is known for being “a woman who can dance up not just a flamenco storm, but a hurricane” (The Guardian).
Joining Baras on the line-up at Sadler’s Wells Theatre are; Muerte de Amor from Andalusian dancer and choreographer Manuel Liñán and company. Dripping with passion and his trademark subversive brilliance, Muerta de Amor embraces desire, fantasy and more; Romancero del Baile Flamenco from choreographer Mercedes Ruiz and composer and guitarist Santiago Lara; Con-Cierto Flamenco from Farruquito and his son El Moreno and Pineda: Romance popular en tres estampas, an adaptation of the Lorca play by Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía.
At the brand-new Sadler’s Wells East, the UK premiere of Retablo experimental sobre el baile flamenco from Estévez and Paños celebrate the union of tradition and vanguard, the orthodox and the experimental, the interplay of cante (song) and baile (dance), and the convergence of body and soul, past and present in a vibrant tribute to the ever-evolving art of flamenco. Meanwhile, a stellar line-up of performances at the smaller Lilian Baylis Studio space includes Rosario La Tremendita, Queralt Lahoz and Ángeles Toledano.
Outside Sadler’s Wells, Kings Place plays host to La Guitarra Flamenca, three amazing events presented in partnership with International Guitar Foundation featuring acclaimed guitarists Alejandro Hurtado, Inma Solomón Hurtado and Álvaro Martinete. Events also take place at the Jazz Cafe in partnership with Como No, where GRAMMY award-winning, all-female Flamenco quartet Las Migas and one of Spain’s most talked about emerging duos La Plazuela make their London debuts.
