One of our favourite artists here at Culture Calling, Cody Currie’s gracing Hackney's EartH Kitchen with an all-night set, bringing fans his signature mix of house, soul, broken beat, and jazz.
In the spirit of artists like Kaidi Tatham and 30/70, Currie’s genre-defying, infinitely-groovable style holds at its core the sensibilities of house, while spicing up the arrangements around the edges; unquantized drums, jazz solos, advanced syncopation, all combine into a dizzying frenzy of drums and bass, making it impossible to stay still.
His album Lucas made waves with its simple mix of charming melodies and addictive house drums, becoming one of our favourite dance records of recent years for its simultaneous radio-friendliness and swaggering edge that would land at any disco rave.
Curry appears as a continuation of the ongoing Freedom 35 series, a jubilant showcasing of dance and underground talent. Sharing the grassroots ethos with its host, EartH Kitchen, the spotlight will be on the new, the brave, the artists unashamed to show themselves off against the grain. It also doubles as a community space for local and social causes. Definitely worth checking, especially for the price.
