A true innovator in Latin fusion music, Joe Bataan’s career spans boogaloo, salsa, and early hip-hop, leaving an indelible mark on New York’s musical legacy. Born to a Filipino-American family in East Harlem, his early life took a dramatic turn, from leading a street gang to a prison stint, before music became his redemption.

After his release in 1965, he formed Joe Bataan and the Latin Swingers, quickly signing with Fania Records. His 1966 debut, Gypsy Woman, featuring a Latin twist on The Impressions’ classic, catapulted him to fame. Over eight albums with Fania, including the gold-certified Riot!, he perfected his signature blend of Latin rhythms and soulful vocals.

In 1973, he co-founded Salsoul Records, pioneering the salsa-soul fusion that defined an era. His 1979 track Rap-O Clap-O even became an early hip-hop anthem.

After retiring in 1981, Bataan made a triumphant return to music, and now, he graces the stage once more for a rare, must-see performance, at our favourite North London spot.
