The once-in-a-year, unique chance to experience the fantastic Victorian Ice Wells on a guided tour.
Sunday 3rd August ICE SUNDAY!!!
On Sunday 3rd August London Canal Museum will offer visitors the rare and amazing opportunity to descend into the historic ice wells beneath the building. Two circular wells, each around 30 feet in diameter, once stored imported ice from Norway and they have been partially excavated. These are commercial ice wells on a far bigger scale than the ice wells of grand houses. A museum guide will escort groups of up to 20 at a time down two ladders to explore this underground industrial archaeology and its not to be missed!
Discover the story of how ice was cut in Norway and sent by sailing ship to London’s Limehouse Docks, and onward by canal to the 1860s ice warehouse, now home to the London Canal Museum.
Theres also a guided building tour by an engineering historian, plus an illustrated talk on the ice trade and the building’s original owner the incredible entrepreneur Carlo Gatti.
Also see (and taste!) the pre-refrigeration ice cream method developed by another ice vanguard of the Victorian age, Mrs Marshall.
Prices are £12.00 for adults and £10.50 concession. Museum entry is included
