Norman Jay MBE & Sancho Panza..Up On The Roof - at Prince of Wales, Brixton

7 September 2024 The Prince of Wales

British funk and disco great is back at the POW for another unforgettable eve of old school moving and grooving.

Though summer may be drawing to a close, the Prince of Wales will still have you believing in 9pm sunsets and breakfast Pimms. A lovely little rooftop spot, rocking in rain or shine (but mostly shine), the POW are quite delighted to have a legend like Norman Jay MBE in the building once more.

Norman Jay’s legacy in British dance music is unmatched. A pioneer of Black British Dance music, he became known as the first DJ to play funk and disco at Notting Hill Carnival. His credentials stretch back to when KISS FM was pirate, where on air he coined the term ‘rare groove’, referring to funk, soul, and disco tracks left mostly obscure.

For his efforts in pushing dance music and culture forward, he became the first ever DJ to be awarded an MBE. Quite the repertoire for a man who has never had a studio album.

And now, he brings his decades of experience and similarly large record collection back home to the Prince of Wales, for another day-and-night jamboree on the rooftop. Enjoy friends.
