Talk: 1714 and all that: The Board of Longitude reconsidered 23 September 2025
A free online talk by Dr Richard Dunn, Keeper of Technologies and Engineering at the Science Museum, goes beyond the commonly repeated narrative of the British Board of Longitude and the development of ways to find longitude at sea.
Adult Astronomy Courses
Unlock the secrets of the universe with these adult astronomy courses. From six-week introductory courses to a one-year intermediate course to a two-year course for budding astrophysicists, there is something for every astronomy enthusiast. With the exciting renovation project occurring at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the on-site courses have been moved to the National Maritime Museum. Several online courses are also on offer, so people can attend wherever they are in the world!
PLANETARIUM SHOWS
Peter Harrison Planetarium
The Peter Harrison Planetarium, featuring state-of-the-art technology, is the only public planetarium in London and is the centrepiece of the Royal Observatory’s Astronomy Centre. The Planetarium, along with parts of the Royal Observatory, will be closed to the public from 8 September due to a restoration project. The first weekend of September will be the last chance to see one of the Planetarium shows.
Ted’s Space Adventure - 6, 7 September 2025
Young visitors can explore the Solar System with a bear named Ted (and its companion Plant), learning about the things we find there and how they affect us. £12 Adult | £6 Child.
Audio Universe - 6, 7 September 2025
The audience will be transported inside a special spacecraft to the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) to view the stars in the night sky, before lifting off into space to visit the Earth, Moon, Sun and all the planets of the Solar System. £12 Adult | £8 Student | £6 Child.
The Sky Tonight - 6, 7 September 2025
This live show, presented by a Royal Observatory astronomer, takes visitors on a tour of what can be seen in the night sky on the day of their visit, featuring anything from constellations to meteor showers. £12 Adult | £8 Student | £6 Child
Moons Beyond Counting - Weekends and holidays
From the Earth’s closest neighbour in space, the Moon, to the moons of the distant gas giants, this show explores the Solar System’s many natural satellites. £12 Adult | £8 Student | £6 Child.
