Explore a decade characterised by its bold creativity and rebellious spirit.
The 90s, a new exhibition curated by Edward Enninful OBE, an image maker who has played a pivotal role in shaping fashion’s history, explores a transformative decade of bold creativity and rebellious spirit. Open at Tate Britain from October 1st 2026 - Sunday 14 February 2027, the exhibition delves into the cultural explosion that reshaped British identity following the end of the Cold War and the country’s recovery from recession.
A new dawn of optimism, freedom, and rebellion was ushered in, epitomised by a new generation of diverse creative talent. This sense of boundless opportunity resulted in art, design, fashion and music fusing into one potent cultural force, signalling an audacious renewal of British spirit. The exhibition explores how long-held hierarchies were dismantled, with high art and pop culture feeding into one another, and looks at the enduring influence of key figures who emerged from this time.
Featured works include iconic photographs by Juergen Teller, Nick Knight, and Corinne Day, capturing the defiant energy of the time. Alongside these images are art pieces by Damien Hirst, Gillian Wearing, and Yinka Shonibare, whose works reflect the era’s irreverent spirit. The exhibition also highlights key fashion collections from designers like Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, and Hussein Chalayan, whose innovative creations defined the decade’s visual language.
