The Dao is a Non Sequitur

5 September 2024 to 8 September 2024 62 Roman Road

Gertrude is pleased to present the solo show of Timothy Hon Hung Lee.

The exhibition Dao is a Non Sequitur marks a profound evolution in Lee's practice, transitioning from the traditions of ink painting to the evocative medium of oil, revealing a radical shift in both technique and visual language.

This exploration delves into Lee's own subjectivity, challenging the stereotyped visual norms that have long dominated our cultural imagination. By manipulating a mélange of screenshots, stock imagery, and AI-generated simulations, Lee reduces his subject matter and their qualia to their base properties, creating space to reshape the structures of identity. His paintings, along with their koan-like titles, work in unison to defamiliarize reality, coagulating the boundaries of perception, language, and meaning, illuminating the myriad ways in which we make sense of our place in the world.

The Dao is a Non Sequitur is the inaugural exhibition of Lee’s oil on canvas works.
