Toots and the Maytals with Leba Hibbert - KOKO

2 May 2025 KOKO

One of reggae's most recognisable and beloved acts takes over one of North London's premier venues for an unforgettable night of classics.

Formed in the 1960s as The Maytals, the group rebranded as Toots and the Maytals with their 1969 debut album Sweet and Dandy. Renowned as one of ska and rocksteady’s greatest acts, they also made history by coining the term "reggae" in their 1968 hit Do The Reggay. Fronted by the legendary Frederick "Toots" Hibbert—a reggae icon named one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Singers—the band became global ambassadors of Jamaican music, blending soul, gospel, and infectious rhythms into timeless anthems.

Their catalog includes classics like *54-46 Was My Number*, Pressure Drop, Funky Kingston, and Monkey Man, songs that defined reggae’s golden era and influenced generations of artists. Toots’ raw, soulful voice and the band’s energetic style earned them crossover appeal, with covers by The Clash, The Specials, and Amy Winehouse cementing their legacy.

Following Toots’ passing in 2020, his daughter Leba Hibbert now leads the group, honoring her father’s spirit while carving her own path. A seasoned artist, she’s collaborated with reggae royalty like Sly & Robbie and Jimmy Cliff and released solo work, ensuring the Maytals’ revolutionary sound endures.

From their early days in Kingston to Grammy-winning success, Toots and the Maytals remain reggae’s rebellious heartbeat—proof that great music transcends time.

Now, they arrive at Camden's beloved KOKO, an classical auditorium that suits the grandeur of the group while also being cosy enough to feel like an intimate performance. We'll see you there!
