Combat that Saturday night hangover with a Sunday afternoon roast in South East London

South East London’s studenty areas of New Cross, Peckham and Camberwell are well known for their amazing nightlife, and where there’s good pubs, there are good hangovers. Nothing combats a hangover quite like a loaded plate of meat, roast veg and Yorkshire puddings, so order yourself a bloody Mary and sit down for a true Sunday afternoon treat.

The Crooked Well

16 Grove Lane, Camberwell, London, SE5 8SY

Widely regarded as one of the best roast dinners in South East London is The Crooked Well, a luxury pub-come-restaurant with an amazing food menu. Just 10-minutes down the road from Denmark Hill station, this pretty pub is always packed out with cosy diners on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon. Owing to its quality and popularity, this roast will set you back a pretty penny. Solo diners can enjoy sumptuous roast beef for £18.50 or pork loin for £17.50, whilst two people dining together should delve into the shared roast leg of lamb (£38) or whole corn-fed chicken (£38). Naturally, all the trimmings come in abundance and you can add another Yorkie for just £1. Sadly however, the cauliflower cheese will cost you another fiver.

The Camberwell Arms

65 Camberwell Church Street, London, SE5 8TR

Another highly rated Sunday spot, The Camberwell Arms is one of the most popular pubs in SE. Owned by the same gang who run Peckham’s rooftop bar Franks, this pub is the perfect winter equivalent to a refreshing cocktail on top of a multi-storey car park. It’s definitely a quality over quantity kind of eatery, offering artisan style British dishes that are a bit different from your bog-standard Aunt Bessie’s. Most of the roast options come perfect for sharing, with a whole herb-fed chicken costing £56 for four people to share and a slow roasted spring lamb (with hot mint sauce - strange) £48 for three. We’d love to try the amazing roasted Porchetta with chicory, anchovy and roast potatoes as this one is just £21 per person and can be ordered individually. However, we must warn you - this joint is strictly Yorkshire pudding free, so don’t turn up expecting piles of tasty Yorkies.

The Tiger

18 Camberwell Green, London, SE5 7AA

Whilst this bar’s Friday and Saturday late DJ sets make this a bustling spot for weekend night’s out, it’s a calm and collected place for pub-grub the rest of the week. Happily welcoming families and dogs, The Tiger is a fab spot for some tasty and filing dishes - including its Sunday roast. They offer plenty of meat-eating options, but their vegan and veggie dishes take the prize for being Sunday’s best. They’re the only place in Camberwell that offer a seitan joint - a welcome option in a sea of nut roasts and mushroom wellingtons! You’ll get plenty of roasties and veg as standard, and they also do vegan Yorkshire puddings! Rejoice!

The Sun of Camberwell

Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, London, SE5 9NS

In between Camberwell and Loughborough Junction is the wonderful Sun of Camberwell, a fab and friendly pub with locally sourced British food. You’re going to get a hearty plate of roast here at The Sun, all piled on top of a generous Yorkshire pudding and lashings of gravy. Whilst their meat options are certainly well sourced and deliciously prepared, their veggie and vegan options take the biscuit for Camberwell’s best. Their chestnut mushroom wellington comes enveloped in a tasty duvet of pastry and alongside a selection of vegan roasted veg. At just £12.50 it’s one of the cheapest options for a Camberwell Sunday dinner - ideal for if you’ve woken up with less money in your Monzo than you would have liked. Make a meal of it and order a shared baked camembert to start off with.

The Phoenix

Windsor Walk, Denmark Hill, London, SE5 8BB

Work up an appetite for a plate piled high with a walk around the wonderful Ruskin Park, before heading over the road to The Phoenix. A charming local pub with plenty of food and drinks on offer, this place is perfect for families and couples looking for a tasty roast dinner. Huge Yorkshire puddings come with tasty roast beef (£15) or half roast-chicken (£13.50), or two together can share a whole roast chicken with trimmings for just £23.50! Over Christmas The Phoenix is offering pigs-in-blankets and gingerbread stuffing, alongside an incredibly popular nut roast for vegan and veggies! They offer an extensive mains menu alongside the Sunday Roast, so your friends who don’t like dousing their dish in gravy (weird) will be satisfied too!
