There is no better place to spend a day out then Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) and with the newly re-opened Cutty Sark DLR station that now gives visitors a lot more opportunity to soak up the summer season in Maritime Greenwich.

Located near the riverside in one of London’s most charming areas, RMG is made up of the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, Queen’s House and the Royal Observatory Greenwich, which are all located in a UNESCO world heritage site. This offers an idyllic combination of beautiful green spaces, history, astronomy and culture and they are all within easy walking distance of each other.

As well as a jam-packed calendar of things to see such as the ‘ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year 17’ exhibition and interactive science show ‘Unboxing the Universe’, RMG has just opened Astronomers Take Over, a new temporary gallery at the National Maritime Museum, giving visitors the opportunity to meet Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomers, participate in science demonstrations and ask questions about space and astronomy.

The Royal Observatory’s project ‘First Light’ is now supported by government funding, receiving £21.9m from DCMS. This will be used to support heritage conservation as part of the redevelopment of the site conserving the heritage of Britain’s oldest purpose-built scientific institution, protecting the Royal Observatory for future generations.

The historical site of the ROG, home to Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian remains open over the summer, so it is a great opportunity to see these treasures over the next few months.

This year, ROG will also host the artwork Mirror Moon by multi-disciplinary British artist Luke Jerram which will go on display at the meridian courtyard. Made of stainless steel and measuring two metres in diameter, this new installation uses accurate topographic data from NASA to map the textures of the Moon onto the mirrored steel surface. Also, after vital conservation work, John Harrison’s H1 timepiece will be back on display at ROG.

Once visitors have explored the National Maritime Museum, Royal Observatory Greenwich, Queen’s House and the Cutty Sark, there is nearby Greenwich market for a spot of shopping and plenty of traditional pubs lining the beautiful vista.
