The Lightening Thief

When 16 year old Percy Jackson discovers that he is the half-blood son of the Greek God, Poseidon, his life takes a dramatic turn as he is plunged into a world much bigger than he could possibly have imagined. With newly-discovered powers he can’t control, a destiny he doesn’t want and a whole mythology textbook’s worth of mythical monsters on his tail, Percy must learn what it means to be a hero. The future of the world hangs in the balance as Percy and his friends embark on an epic adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat.

The musical was a huge hit across the pond and with the Percy Jackson series being such a beloved franchise, it'll be no surprise that English audiences have immediately latched onto this comedic masterpiece. It is without doubt a fantastically fun adaptation of the best-selling novel and with music and lyrics by Rob Rokicki, this production wonderfully expresses the struggles of youth and not knowing quite where you fit in.

Bringing this story to the stage is a huge undertaking – a LOT happens in Riordan’s book, there are so many characters both heroes and villains to get to know, and a range of adventures that take place against dramatic backdrops, both in our world and that of the gods. Though The Other Palace is a relatively small space, it is the perfect venue for this show. Full use is made of the stage with a stunningly impressive set design, visually thrilling, it successfully immerses you into the world of the Greek Gods and their children.

Morgan Gregory leads the cast as Percy Jackson in a heroic lead performance that always dominates. Consistently shining with comedic skills and a perplexed look that speaks to the absurdity of what he has been thrown into, Gregory elevates the role by showcasing his winning vocals in a performance everybody will be talking about…

Directed and choreographed by Lizzi Gee, the time flies by as we go on this whirlwind trip into an unbelievable fantasy. And the music, which by itself is enough reason to see the show, the way it’s performed takes it to a whole new level. Highlights include the infectious ‘Good Kid’, the rousing standout ‘D.O.A.’ and epic show closer ‘Bring On The Monsters’.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Percy Jackson or not, this musical is a must-see. It’s packed with energy, humor, and emotion, brought to life by a talented cast and an intimate, electric theatre setting. From the choreography to the fantastic music, the show delivers on every level, a rollercoaster ride full of fun and speed. It’s a show that leaves you smiling long after the final curtain call.
