Dance Umbrella Festival 2022

7 October 2022 to 23 October 2022 London

London’s annual international dance festival is back 7-23 October, celebrating 21st century choreography across the capital and beyond, bringing some of the world’s most exciting dance talent to London’s stages.

This year’s programme, curated by resident Artistic Director and CEO Freddie Opoku-Addaie, sees the festival ramp up the energy with a full programme of live shows, including eight UK premieres taking place across 11 locations. As well as taking over London for the month, dance fans worldwide can gain access to a jam-packed digital programme of content including dance films, discussions, and the return of much-loved behind the scenes series Choreographer’s Cut, available throughout the festival to watch On Demand.

This year’s line-up brings some of the most important bodies to the stage, platforming multi award-winning artists at exciting stages of their careers. Dance artist Oona Doherty brings her new show Navy Blue to Sadler’s Wells for the UK premiere, collaborating with musician Jamie xx. Greek duo Georgia Tegou & Michalis Theophanus take over The Place with their visual arts-crossing ‘dance-as-design’ work Reverie. Nora Chipaumire makes her Dance Umbrella debut at Bernie Grant Arts Centre, with the world premiere of ShebenDUB, an audio-visual dub culture adventure, part gig, part dance performance, and part social event featuring live sound systems.

Dance Umbrella will be bringing the festival to the National Gallery for the first time, with Chiara Bersani’s Seeking Unicorns, as well as taking over the stage of brand-new venue Brixton House with a curated international triple bill Change Tempo featuring dance solos by Joy Alpuerto Ritter, Linda Hayford, and Brazilian artists Luiz de Abreu and Calixto Neto’s iconic solo work O Samba do Crioulo Doido. For dance fans ages 2+, the Netherland’s de Stilte brings multi-sensory family show Do-re-mi-ka-do to six venues across London.
