Historic England has launched their podcast series and accompanying eBook called High Street Tales, which are the first outcomes of a four year-long national Cultural Programme led by Historic England, in partnership with Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The Cultural Programme features new digital and physical artworks inspired by our nation’s high streets. The project aims to make our high streets more attractive and engaging for people to spend time.
Eight writers have worked with their local communities to explore the everyday occurrences of high streets, creating seven new short stories, High Street Tales. They have been published in an eBook which features an introduction by writer Andy Miller and is available to read via the Historic England website
The writers have also narrated each of their stories for a podcast series, which will be released weekly. Each podcast draws on a different high street around the country. The first episode, In Time and the Shoe Man was launched on the 10th February. Musician and writer Celia Bryce draws on folk tradition, history and from online and ‘offline’ conversations in her hometown.

Other events to look out for as part of the four year-long Cultural Programme are a major three-year photographic commission to explore the changing face of the high streets, a release of artist names and locations of six new site-specific artworks and a series of new sounds walks.
