An exhibition showcasing the work of five unique and exciting fine art painters from across the Liverpool city region and Northwest of England.
From 22nd January 2024, Kirkby Gallery presents ‘Five’, an exhibition showcasing five very different fine art painting practices by artists all with a connection to Liverpool region. Sophie Elsden, Paul Gatenby, Natalie Gilmore, Tony O’Connell, and Alun Roberts all feature in this unique exhibition giving visitors the opportunity to explore the practice of each artist, their ideas and techniques up close.
Each artist has a different approach to painting, using different materials and styles to capture a range of subjects. Kirkby Gallery hosts this exhibition every five years, featuring five new artists, giving an insight to contemporary painting and the local creative scene.
Alun Roberts is inspired by the effect of light on the subject and captures a unique mood in each of his paintings.
Tony O’Connell creates work exploring themes of grief or loss and combines modern and ancient images from art history, reimagining them anew.
Natalie Gilmore works with layers of acrylic to represent the shapes, colours and textures from focal areas within a larger landscape.
Paul Gatenby developed from urban sketching to painting forgotten corners of the city that are imbued with a sense of poetic tragedy. He also paints people, portraying the real personalities of his sitters.
Sophie Elsden creates a visual description of her surroundings and an expression of herself. Utilising the flexibility of paint to make emotional self-portraits, capturing particular moments.
Roger Owen will be exhibiting a selection of his oil and watercolour paintings in the Entrance Gallery, as a compliment to the main exhibition.
Kirkby Gallery will host a Private View on Thursday 18 January from 5.30pm to 7pm. Alongside this to celebrate Knowsley being 50 in 2024 there will be two free performances in Kirkby Town Centre at 4pm and again at 6.45pm, as led by Spark! drummers and Walk the Plank, who return to Knowsley with a dazzling performance and stage effects.
