The Northern Chamber Orchestra return to Manchester’s Stoller Hall for the next concert in their Sunday afternoon series. They are joined by violinist Chloë Hanslip, who made her BBC Proms debut at the age of 14. She plays Shostakovich’s Violin Sonata, composed in 1968 for David Oistrakh on his 60th birthday. Arranged for violin, strings and percussion by violinist Mikhail Zinman, it is a powerfully emotional piece.

The programme begins with Grieg’s Holberg Suite, an evocation of a time 200 years earlier when Ludvig Holberg, the Norwegian Shakespeare, was born. Also on the programme are Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, a jewel of the string orchestra repertoire, and Finzi’s beautiful, bitter-sweet Romance for string orchestra.
