Pioneers, by Nick Smith

22 October 2020 to 28 November 2020

From 22 October - 28 November, Rhodes Contemporary is proud to present Pioneers, a solo exhibition by Nick Smith, that observes American art and cultural heritage through word-colour associations.

Smith created this series of work during lockdown, where he spent his time in Crinan, Scotland. The exhibition is a celebration of iconic American art and design. Smith incorporates word-colour associations, which he calls ‘phycolourgy’, combining text and image to create collaged works.

From a distance, we see a pixelated image formed with an array of colour chips, but on closer examination, the image is abstracted and the words become readable. Each colour chip responds to a word, creating either complimentary or juxtaposing meanings. The use of words is a form of expression from the artist, revealing how Smith felt during the unsettling time of lockdown.
