RNCM Symphony Orchestra at RNCM, Manchester

Until 25 October 2019Visit websiteBook tickets

A modernist icon, people were never quite sure what Stravinsky was going to do next. While he was Russian through and through, Paris was a crucial city for him and in 1910, it hosted the world première of his breakthrough piece, The Firebird.

The evening's programme also features Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major Op 35, an uninhibited duet for soloist and orchestra. The world première had a myriad of Manchester connections. Russian violinist Adolph Brodsky – later to become leader of the Hallé Orchestra and Principal of the Royal Manchester College of Music at the invitation of Sir Charles Hallé – performed the concerto in Vienna in 1881, under the baton of his friend, Hans Richter (who became the Hallé’s conductor in 1899).

RNCM are very lucky to be able to tap into some real treasures from their archives that are part of this story. They have Tchaikovsky’s letters to Brodsky and readings from these letters, plus Anna Brodsky’s eye-witness account of the première, which will feature as part of this unique performance.
