Ruth Asawa: Citizen of the Universe

12 February 2021 to 9 May 2021

Citizen of the Universe is the first public solo exhibition of artist Ruth Asawa at the Modern Art Oxford gallery. Asawa was an American sculptor who was also an arts education advocate. As a teenager Asawa lived in an internment camp due to the forced relocation and incarceration of Japanese-Americans by the US government during World War Two. Whilst living in these extreme conditions Ruth found her love for art and has since believed in its positive force for social good.

The exhibition features Asawa’s renowned hanging sculptures, made from wire and celebrates her integration of art, education and community engagement through a display of prints, drawing, letters and photographs.
