This month we Towner unveiled Cruising the Collection, a new display of Collection works exploring the expression of queer identity. Two major shows introducing the legacy of Lucy Wertheim also continue across the top floor galleries and feature over 150 works by artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Phelan Gibb, Walter Sickert and Henry Moore. Plus so much more this August…

Cruising the Collection…

Towner are excited to announce that they have finally opened  Cruising the Collection, a new free exhibition exploring queer narratives in the Towner Collection and the unsung histories and hidden connections between Collection works and their artists, including Wilfred Avery, Edward Burra, Kathleen Walne, Cedric Morris, John Minton and Elizabeth Andrews.

Welcoming, inclusive and insightful, Cruising the Collection has transformed our first floor gallery into a space where conversations and fresh perspectives are revealed and where the Collection is opened up to memories, emotions and experiences of queerness.

This exhibition emerged from the collaboration with the LGBTQIA+ participants who came together to voice the 2021 podcast series Collectively, available to listen to on all major streaming platforms or on the Towner website.

No need to book, just turn up (open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10.00am to 5.00pm).

A Life in Art & Reuniting the Twenties Group…

These two complementary shows reveal the legacy of pioneering gallerist Lucy Wertheim, whose approach to curation and collection focused on building relationships and providing passionate support to young artists, many of whom are now household names. See over 150 works by artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Phelan Gibb, Walter Sickert and Henry Moore alongside original letters and ephemera.

If you’re interested in learning more about Lucy Wertheim and “her” artists, as well as getting an exclusive insight into the behind-the-scenes process of putting on a show like this, join us for a Curator Tour on Wednesday 17 August. Karen Taylor, the exhibition’s curator, will lead you around the gallery and provide an opportunity for questions. This event is free for ticket holders, meet outside Gallery 2 at 2.00pm.

Book your ticket for the exhibitions below. Towner Members go free.

Open Plan…

This summer, Towner have opened their doors for Open Plan, a studio programme designed with artist Sophie Chapman. 48 artists based in Sussex and Kent have been selected via an open call to come together over the month of August to share space, ideas and processes and support each other in generating new artworks.

Each week, an invited workshop artist will join the group to collaborate on the development of ideas, including the delivery of a public event. Drop in from 10.00am to 5.00pm Tuesdays to Saturdays to meet, chat and learn from these diverse local artists.

£3 Family Film at Towner Cinema…

Every Wednesday and Sunday in August at 10.30am, join us for a short family feature for only £3! Every week, we present a new and unique film selected for its captivating art style, uplifting message and powerful story.
