Video Jam presents: Spaces-in-between at the RNCM, Manchester

7 February 2020Visit websiteBook tickets

In an age of mass displacement, what does it mean to feel ‘at home’? Video Jam presents five commissioned short films by artists based around the world, each scored by a different UK composer, reflecting on home and history, desire and estrangement, nationhood and mythology, extinction and exile.

The event will explore and re-imagine a variety of indeterminate, contested or hidden spaces: deserted opera houses in the Middle East and incomplete cityscapes in Eastern Europe, ancient mythological hinterlands and places now only accessible via Google Maps. While the film programme boldly bridges the gap between cinema and artist moving image, premiering new works by Saodat Ismailova, Joe Namy, Christin Turner, Razan AlSalah and Oleksiy Radynski, the RNCM stage will be co-inhabited by an eclectic mix of approaches to sound and music, including Lafawndah, Nabihah Iqbal, Seaming To, CHAINES, Kelly Jayne Jones and RNCM students.

Video Jam, ‘audio-visual masterminds’ (Time Out) and Winners of a Manchester Culture Award, present their first Manchester event in three years, developed in partnership with the British Council’s Film + Music Programme and the RNCM.
