3, 2, 1 – Action! Where to Find Iconic Film Locations in the UK

4 September 2017 | Nicola Freedman

When traveling to a new city, there are a few must dos. See the sights, eat the local cuisine and post enough photos to make your friends back home incredibly jealous. However, if you’re in the UK, and looking for a more unique (and fun) way to see the country, check out our guide to the must visit film locations.

Braveheart

Often heralded as one of modern cinema’s most epic war films, and the winner of five Oscars to boot, Braveheart has had a long lasting impression on audiences past and present. With the Scottish landscape so beautifully captured in the biopic, it comes as no surprise that travelers continue to flock to see the breathtaking sights. To experience the film’s Scottish countryside at its best, put on your hiking boots, or take a mountain bike, and hit the trail in the Highlands. Venture out into Glencoe, Glen Nevis (the wettest valley in Europe) and Loch Leven, all key locations used in the film. If this Scottish jaunt doesn’t inspire you to cry 'freedom!’ we don’t know what will.

Harry Potter

Beloved by children and adults alike, J.K Rowling’s spellbinding story about a boy wizard captivated audiences around the world when it made its silver screen debut sixteen years ago (!). With eight films shot in total, the Harry Potter series defined a decade of British filmmaking, showcasing both the nation’s most exciting talent and its stunning landmarks and landscapes. Relive the magic and begin your Potter pilgrimage by heading to London’s Kings Cross Station, where the Hogwarts Express famously departs from Platform 9¾. Join the queue and take a picture pushing a trolley (complete with a Gryffindor scarf) in front of the wall between platforms 9 and 10, before hopping on a train to Oxford where the University’s New College, Christ Church and Bodleian Library all provided settings for the Wizarding School itself.

James Bond

Along with martinis, car chases and the eponymous Bond Girl, the breathtaking backdrops and iconic scenery are a trademark of any James Bond film. While London has featured prominently in the 007 franchise with famous landmarks like the London Eye, MI6 and Camden Lock Market popping up, filming locations span across the whole country. Make your way to Oxfordshire to see the spectacular Blenheim Palace, recently featured in Spectre, or hire a car (although much more stylish, Aston Martins are not essential) and follow the driving route along the River Etie in Glencoe. As you zip along, take in the hauntingly beautiful Scottish scenery that formed the backdrop of the Bond family estate in Skyfall.

Notting Hill

Home to Portobello Market and the annual Carnival, cosmopolitan Notting Hill catapulted into stardom when featured in Richard Curtis’ classic rom-com Notting Hill. While The Travel Book Shop, which doubled as Grant’s Travel Book Company, has now closed, you can thankfully still get a picture in front of the film’s iconic blue door. Afterwards, pop into one of many excellent cafes, wander down the colourful mews, and get lost exploring one of London’s most desirable and charming neighborhoods.

You can find the blue door (sadly sans Hugh Grant) at 280 Westbourne Park Road, Notting Hill, London W11

Pride and Prejudice

While countless adaptations of Jane Austen’s seminal Pride and Prejudice have been made, perhaps none quite captured the novel’s setting as beautifully as Joe Wright’s 2005 film. Bathed in the golden light of sunset and hazy early morning dew, Pride and Prejudice is a romantic, sumptuous visual feast of historic estates and the sweeping English countryside. At the top of any Pride and Prejudice tour is a visit to Groombridge Place near Tunbridge Wells in Kent, which played host to the Bennet family home. However, if you’re after a more lavish affair, head north to Derbyshire to visit Chatsworth House, which provided the exterior and interiors for Mr. Darcy’s stately Pemberley abode.
