6 Ways to Brighten Up Blue Monday in London

Blue Monday, claimed to be the most depressing day of the year, falls on the 21 January in 2019. And yes: the weather is dreary, we’ve all started to give up a little bit on bringing homemade lunches to work and we’re a little bit skint. But no day can be that blue when you’re in London: from free food to jumping into Parli Hill lido, here are our picks of the best ways to add some light to your Blue Monday.

1. Have a feliz lunes at Cantina Laredo
Mexican eatery Cantina Laredo in Covent Garden is making sure everyone will have a little sugar sprinkled on top of their Monday with some delicious freebies. From midday, the restaurant will be giving away 100 free churros and cups of Mexican hot chocolate – guaranteed to warm you up, body and soul.

2. Get some belly laughs at Soho Theatre
Ok, so you’ll have to wait until Tuesday for this one, but we can promise you Sara Barron’s show For Worse won’t leave you po-faced. The ‘reigning queen of New York’s live storytelling scene' covers many a subject in the way that only her uniquely incisive wit can over the hour, not least a tweenage sex script she wrote way back in 1992.

3. Take the plunge for Water Aid
After taking on this challenge on Sunday, there’s nothing Monday will be able to throw at you to faze you. Water Aid is hosting a ‘cold water diving event’ to raise funds for their work providing clean water, which, translated, means you jumping into the temperate, zero-degree waters of Parliament Hill lido. Don’t worry though – you’ll be able to warm your cockles in the sauna or jacuzzi afterwards, as well as getting that post-good deed glow.

4. Banish the blues completely at the Winter Happiness Festival
This is exactly what it sounds like, and is exactly what we need over the deep dark winter period: a festival designed to celebrate all things happy. There are a mixture of free and paid events, including a gong bath, a kindness flash mob and a silent disco, alongside a chill out area, gratitude tree and plenty of yummy vegan food stalls.

5. Try the re-tox menu at Floral by LIMA
January’s limp salads bringing you down? Missing your burgers and chips? Peruvian hotspot Floral has just the tonic: a delicious, colourful January lunch menu created in collaboration with Instagram foodie @LickyPlate, known for his love of indulgent, satisfying dishes. Try the picarones for dessert: a stack of Peruvian pumpkin and sweet potato doughnuts served with homemade dulce de leche sure to make your belly smile.

6. Power up at the power station
For ten days, Battersea Power Station will be hosting a variety of feel-good workshops, talks and events to fortify you for the year ahead. On Sunday you can enjoy a reiki and sound meditation session and next weekend a masterclass in emotional agility, sandwiching that terrible Monday between two uplifting events.
