With sales of the spirit reaching an all-time high in recent years, it’s safe to say that we are living through a gin revival – a ‘ginaissance’ if you will. There are seemingly endless spots popping up all over the country, serving up the best gin around. So if you’re excited by the prospect of distilled juniper berries, then get a glass, some ice and a slice, and a fizzing tonic and enjoy our guide to the UK’s best gin spots – sure to satisfy even the most sceptical spirit drinkers.

1. Slingsby, Harrogate

The historic market town of Harrogate is the perfect setting to discover the wealth of delicious gin infusions on offer at the Slingsby tasting rooms. Here you’ll learn about London’s fascinating gin-crazed history and sample some replicas of old-timey gin from when it was used for medicinal purposes, as well being served generous glugs of gin-based cocktails and a delicious charcuterie smorgasbord and try your hand at crafting some cocktails for yourself. Be sure to have a taxi booked however, as this spot is not for amateurs.

2. The Viaduct Tavern, London

While it might not look like much from the outside, The Viaduct Tavern in central London boasts a rich, gin-soaked history. Built on the site of the Giltspur St Comptor - a debtors' prison – there are claims that in the cellar of the Tavern are five old prison cells. Don’t let that put you off however, as inside you will be rewarded with an authentic Victorian gin palace, the interior of which has survived nicely, and an enviable selection of gins for you to sample. They’ve even maintained a ‘toll booth’ where the landlord would have sold tokens used to buy alcohol.

3. Eden Mill, Scotland

Eden Mill is one of Scotland’s original single site distilleries and breweries, and is also one of their most unique. Located in St.Andrews, the 19th century distillery prides itself on tradition, using ethically and locally soured ingredients from the wild coasts of Scotland and copper pot stills to create some of the finest gin on offer. Book in to one of their tours and you will get behind-the-scenes access to their production rooms, as well as a gin tasting session where you can sample some of the delights from their exquisite range.

4. Atlas Bar, Manchester

If a distillery tour isn’t your thing, but you still fancy an expansive gin selection, then Manchester’s Atlas Bar should be just the tonic. Located on Deansgate, Atlas has been a Manchester institution for last two decades and are well established gin specialists, with a massive 170 different gins to choose from. The bar also hosts monthly Gin Supper Clubs, where a love for great food and great gin come together. You can find out more about these events here.

5. Gin Festivals UK, various locations

If you needed further proof that the UK has well and truly embraced gin as it’s spirit du jour, then the quantity (and quality) of Gin Festivals taking place across the country. Attendees are able to try the latest craft gins, take part in masterclasses and learn about the history of gin. The Gin Festival takes place across the UK and at various times throughout the year, so be sure to check out your local festival and become a verified gin connoisseur.
