A Guide to Valentine’s Day in Manchester 2018

9 February 2018 | Maddie Hammond

Whether you think it’s the most romantic day of the year or a totally fabricated holiday spurred on by greetings card companies, Valentine’s Day is nearly among us and Manchester has plenty of offerings for you to enjoy with your loved ones.

See a Film at a Retro Drive-In

Embrace a touch of 1950’s nostalgia and the intimate setting for a fun twist on the classic cinema date, as Manchester’s Iconic Drive-in Cinema comes to AJ Stadium this month. Kicking off on the 10th February, romantic classics including Romeo and Juliet, Dirty Dancing and The Bodyguard are all on the bill with The Notebook taking the top spot on Valentine’s Day. Food and drink stalls will also be dotted across the site for you to tuck into before the films start, so all you need to worry about is a blanket, the company, and which film you’re going to see.

Take in Some Live Music

Manchester orchestra the Hallé present an opera extravaganza featuring a wonderful collection of world-famous arias, duets and grand orchestral interludes. Soprano Sarah Fox and Tenor Noah Stewart will join the orchestra for the evening under conductor Stephen Bell for what promises to be a romantic and special evening and the perfect Valentines experience. If you prefer a spot of jazz however, then The Pen and Pencil have got you covered. For their Valentine’s Day celebrations, they are serving up a Gin and Jazz night, with £3 G&T’s and Yemi Bolatiwa providing the music.

Enjoy a Night of Comedy

Nothing brings people together quite like having a good ol’ laugh. Luckily, two of Manchester’s top comedy clubs are Valentine’s Day Comedy Special! Head on over to the Frog and Bucket, who have pulled together a fantastic line up of 3 national acts - Kate Lucas, Simon Wozniak and Danny McLoughlin - plus one of the venue's best comperes, Jonathan Mayor. If this doesn’t tickle your funny bone, The Comedy Store are promising plenty of laughter and giggles, with MC Mandy Knight, Ian Stone, Alex Boardman and Adam Rowe all confirmed for the night. Both clubs are offering dining packages to make the night that bit more special, so be sure to book in advance.
