Cosy Autumn Date Spots In London

2 October 2019 | Tom Butler

London is a dating Mecca - if you’re single, lucky you. As the long summer evenings become a distant memory and the trees begin to show the first signs of October’s arrival, the more obvious outdoor dating venues are no longer an option, but fear not, London is home to numerous fantastic autumnal date locations.

BFI Southbank Bar

So we’ll start with what should be at the top of any potential date locations. The bar at the BFI has everything you need: long, low seated, luxurious couches provide ample space to relax and enjoy the evening, the wine list is extensive, the bar snacks delicious and the lighting level just hinting at romance! What’s more, there’s a restaurant and a cinema in the same building, so if it’s going well you can prolong the night with a bite or classic film screening. Oh, and it’s pretty good for celeb spotting, if that’s your thing.

The Gun

Put simply, this is a brilliant pub: traditional and contemporary all rolled into one. The selection of real ale on tap is, like the wine list, well thought out and excellent in execution. Now let’s move on to the food…it’s a bold claim to say it’s in the top 10 pubs in London but it’s a statement we’ll stand by! It also happens to have an amazing location (right on the Thames across from the O2) and be slightly out of the way as well. Which means it’s never as busy as it should be - the perfect date venue!

Almeida Theatre/Le Mercury

For those of you not in the know, the Almeida Theatre – just off Upper Street in Islington – is one of the best theatres in London and has been producing smash hit after smash hit for the last couple of years. Whatever show you see there it is going to be of the highest quality and being a fringe venue means it’s great value for money as well! And sat next to the theatre is Le Mercury. A great, atmospheric, family run French restaurant serving yummy food at ridiculously cheap prices (a three course meal would see you get change from a £20 note). So why not combine a trip to the theatre with a romantic meal, you’ll impress without having to break the bank to do so!

Wellcome Collection

Something a bit different this one. The Wellcome Collection, if you didn’t know, is situated pretty much opposite Euston train station and if you’ve ever considered yourself to be curious in nature then this is the perfect date venue for you. The founder of the collection, Sir Henry Wellcome, had a fascination for medicine and when he died in 1936, he left everything he’d collected (more than 1 million items!) throughout his lifetime to the charitable trust of which the Wellcome Collection is a part. It’s free to enter and the tours are highly recommended, the breadth of their knowledge is incredible. There’s some pretty weird and wonderful collections in there, including Victorian sex toys alongside early surgical implements. So have a stroll around the permanent collections and then enjoy a cake and coffee in the venue’s café. If this doesn’t give you plenty to talk about then nothing will!
