Back to School Series: Food Technology in Bristol

Bristol’s food scene is an obvious and well-established strongpoint of the city. We have just about everything in spades and are utterly spoiled by the vast array of talent, fresh ingredients and creativity. That being said - it’s always fun to wrestle the ovens and wall of menus from the professionals and to take matters into our own hands! Let’s get cutting, baking and maybe even fermenting our favourite foodstuffs…

You will master the spices of the Gujarati Indian cuisine, gaining tools and techniques that will help you bring some powerful cooking back to your own stove. A fan of the crunchy, yet supremely tangy stuff? Been to Korea and seen some odd red cabbage? Kimchi is certainly having its time at the moment, with a huge amount of interest being centred on the role of fermented foods and our gut health. Don’t rely on me as an expert - not when we have Caroline Gilmartin teaching classes on the ins-and-outs of fermentation DIY. Leave with a head jostling full of ideas and a some of your very own jars of kimchi and sauerkraut. Apparently, there are even kimcheese toasties…

Foraging Walks 
Bristol, Bath, Clevedon and further afar

Getting lost in nature is one of life’s true blisses. As Henry David Thoreau aptly wrote in Walden, “We need the tonic of wildness”.So why not combine our adventures in nature with food? Get foraging (with a basket) in this 3-hour long walk, where you will learn how to find and identify plants and mushrooms on your own doorstep (that’s only if you live in a field). This is an excellent opportunity to get out of the city and learn more about the ecosystems that support the cities we all now live in. Leave with the eyes to see food all around you.

Learn how to drink prosecco whilst teasing dough into its final form, applying a topping of choice, all whilst mastering the heat & timings of the oven. Glorious.
