Back to School Series: Performing Arts in London

Welcome to the Culture Calling Back to School series!

September is a strange month that always seems to sneak up on us each year. It marks the sad end of summer, time to put the BBQ away, finish the last of the Pimms and hope the moths haven’t attacked the autumn knitwear currently hidden at the back of a drawer. For students and teachers alike it heralds the start of the new academic year, a time for new #stationarygoals and taking the last breather before an abundance of essays and homework. But what about the rest of us who love any excuse for a new notebook, or long to give our grey cells a kick start by learning something new, but we’ve left the education system far behind?

Welcome to the Culture Calling Back to School series! This week we’ll be taking you on a journey through the sprawling classroom that is London and the abundance of classes, skills (and a little playground silliness) that the city has to offer.

Today it’s the turn of Performing Arts. Whether you were the star of the drama group, danced your way through class or were prematurely hailed as a mini Mozart, we’ve got a selection to satisfy your inner diva with not a Recorder rendition of Hot Cross Buns to be heard.

Join a choir with Some Voices
For anyone missing the days of singing in assembly but not the endless repetition of “She’ll be comin’ round the mountain when she comes”, why not warm up those vocal chords by joining a contemporary choir? With no audition necessary and multiple rehearsal locations weekly across London, Some Voices champions creating an inclusive, fun and friendly atmosphere where singers of all levels and abilities are encouraged to shake off the stresses of everyday life. With end of term shows that range in theme from Black Mirror-esque, Gatsby speakeasy glamour, to Romeo & Juliet, you can belt out everything from Bowie to Blackstreet, Fleetwood Mac to Florence + the Machine, in some of London’s most incredible venues.

Learn some new moves with Swing Patrol
Whether you wowed in the school talent shows or just have the Macarena down to a fine art, you can’t beat a bit of a dance to get the blood pumping and a smile on your face. For something a little different we recommend going retro with Swing dancing classes. Swing Patrol offer weekly classes at 35 venues across the capital, catering from beginning bopper to swing savant. Teaching the high energy Lindy Hop to big band sounds and rotating partners throughout so you don’t need to bring a partner, Swing Patrol is all about having fun whilst learning classic dance styles and creating a community of dancers thanks to their numerous social nights to show off your fancy footwork.
