Big British Winter Walks

26 December 2018 | London Calling

Winter is here, but the days are already getting longer, so why not wrap up and head out for a bracing walk! Here are some of the best big walks to enjoy around the UK.

Sett Valley, Peak District (Manchester side)
Under an hour’s drive from Manchester, the Sett Valley Trail is a brisk, calorie-burner that leads you through the beautiful Peak District countryside and various nature reserves.

Canny ramblers might want to take a flask of tea along with them for a mid-way cuppa… ahhh…

Ightham Mote, Kent
This aptly-named stunning 14th-century manor house sits pretty in its own moat! Enjoy some big lungfuls of crisp, fresh air as you take in Ightham's grounds, before heading inside to check out the art and exhibition space.

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, North Yorkshire
Another National Trust property that’s ripe for stretching your legs – and there are plenty, if you visit the NT website – is Fountains Abbey. On a cold winter's day in 1132, thirteen monks walked from Ripon to a completely deserted valley by the River Skell. There they started their own community from nothing and thus sprung Fountains Abbey.

Pentire Headland, Cornwall
This coastal walk will be sure to blow away any cobwebs! Eyes peeled for seals and all sorts of beautiful creatures along your way – Pentire Head is home to a thriving community of flora and fauna, perfect for any amateur Attenboroughs out there.
