Celebrate Design in London this Autumn

20 August 2019 | Billie Manning

Architecture, art, elephant sculptures... London is going wild for design in all its forms this autumn, so make sure you don't miss out.

Open House
A staggering 800 buildings will throw open their doors this autumn for Open House London, which is, unsurprisingly, the world’s biggest architecture festival. You can poke around everywhere from the Royal College of Physicians to Smithfield Meat Market, most of which you can just turn up to. Some bigguns like 10 Downing Street and London Underground’s headquarters (the last chance to take a peek at its art deco beauty before it gets redeveloped!) require a free pre-booked ticket or a ballot-allocated ticket, so make sure you do all the necessary planning.

London Design Festival
London Design Festival isn’t quite what you’d think of when you think of a festival: there are no muddy wellies or compost toilets in sight here. LDF, which is now in its 17th year, is made up of an exciting programme of installations and events across the capital, all to do with incredible design. From a giant labyrinth outside Westminster Cathedral to costume exhibitions, you’ll be immersed in design from start to finish. Check out our full guide here.

Frieze London
Head over to Regent’s Park to experience one of the biggest events in London’s art calendar. Frieze London features work from more than 160 of the world’s leading galleries, this year from 36 countries, making this 2019’s fair the most international yet. There will be a focus on emerging art from across the world. While you’re there, check out Frieze Sculpture, London’s biggest free outdoor art display, in the English Gardens.

Chihuly Nights at Kew Gardens
Dale Chihuly's glorious glass creations have been wowing London for a long time - his giant chandelier greets visitors as they walk into the entrance hall at the V&A, and his glass sculptures have adorned the foliage of Kew Gardens for the past few months. But now is your chance to see them sparkle in all their glory as they're lit up at this special series of lates at the gardens, where musicians will be responding live to the art and food and drinks will be provided by Kew's shiny new Pavilion Café. This one's sure to be particularly Instagrammable.

Until 26 October

Elmer at the Elephant trail
Here’s one for the kiddos: it’s Elmer the Elephant’s 30th birthday! To celebrate our colourful be-trunked friend, Elmer’s publishers Andersen Press have created a special trail of ten elephant sculptures around Elephant and Castle's Elephant Park (of course). Get your pen and paper out - each elephant includes an anagram forms part of a special challenge for children on the trail to solve.

Until the end of October
