Christmas craft workshops in London

8 December 2017 | Katie Da Cunha Lewin

Sometimes buying presents can seem a little impersonal, so how about making them? It worked for your mum when you were a kid, why not now! We’ve put together a guide about making gifts in the capital this Christmas.

There are more people selling their crafts than ever – check out our handy Christmas market guide – so you are almost spoilt for choice when it comes to gift buying. But, you might also want to look into fun making events and workshops popping up all over London this year.

Drink Shop Do is a café in the day, and a bar at night, hosting workshops, classes and even hen parties. This year, they have lots of great making events, including wreath and table decorations, and Christmas decorations, perfect as gifts or for you to use to decorate your own house.  You could even have a go at lampshade making, choosing from a selection of gorgeous fabrics.

Sew Over It have two studios, one in Clapham and one in Islington, hosting a range of sewing classes for beginners to experts. Everyone loves a Christmas stocking, so why not have a go at making your own! For £40, this three-hour class will step-by-step, take you through how to make your own stocking and decorate it beautifully. If you can’t make it down to the studio, there are also online classes and guides on how to sew other objects, from clothing to pillows.

The London Craft Club celebrates all things craft, providing a space where you can chill out and learn some new skills while chatting to like-minded people.  This Christmas they are offering a range of workshops: their Christmas decoration event is with a slight twist, helping you make something that will last for generations to come, and maybe even starting a new family tradition. Or how about some botanical paper art, in the shape of cute mistletoe? They also have a wide range of workshops for next year already up online if you were stuck for ideas for a gift for a trickier person.

The National Trust always host events celebrating traditional craft at the time of year. Modern Hall Park host a Christmas centrepiece making workshop so you can have a gorgeous traditional table decoration. Osterley Park and House are also hosting a wreath-making workshop with foliage cut from the very grounds of the house.  If you are prepared to go further afield, check out their event listings, as their houses all over the UK host various different workshops for individuals and families.

Tea and Crafting host a knitting workshop with a difference: using arm knitting, they will teach you to knit a huge blanket – really check out the picture! Or, improve your Christmas cards with some Christmas calligraphy so that your cards stand out this year.
