Echoes of a Mountain Song – Sir Thomas Allen at The Bridgewater Hall

31 March 2016 | London Calling

The Bridgewater Hall’s concert series Echoes of a Mountain Song is a celebration of the ‘beauty and poetry of the northern landscapes’, featuring concerts, events and workshops running until late April, including the concert on Wednesday 30 March with baritone Sir Thomas Allen, accompanied by pianist Joseph Middleton.

Sir Thomas is an undoubted giant of the classical world (and of opera in particular) and this concert was a rare opportunity to hear him in a slightly different setting, performing a range of works by British composers such as songs from Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad and Vaughan Williams The Vagabond, as well as traditional songs from his childhood in the North-East.

Backed up by just the soft strains of the piano, or even unaccompanied on occasion, his voice was captivating throughout – not just in his brilliant musicality but in his ability to convey the full story of each song.

From the humour of traditional tunes ‘Elsie Marley’ and ‘Fotty agin the wall’ to the sorrow of ‘Is my Team Ploughing’, Sir Thomas truly made the audience feel every emotion, and left them clamouring for more (two encores, in fact!) Together with the folk music performers in the Bridgewater Hall’s foyer, the evening was a wonderful display of the some of the best of British music.

Echoes of a Mountain Song continues with multiple events during the finale weekend on Saturday 23 – Sunday 24 April 2016.
