Explore Manchester’s Best Art Fairs

Carlie George Hedmann

Ask anyone to name some of the best artists that Manchester has produced and they won’t to hesitate to answer; Oasis, The Smiths, perhaps even Take That. They wouldn’t be wrong, but that’s just scratching the surface. The city has always been a cultural hub and whilst not always centre stage, there is a thriving art scene, with numerous pieces scattered around town – take the giant Vimto bottle on Granby Row or the heart wrenching sculpture of the soldiers from World War One stood outside Piccadilly station. If you’re looking for a fun way to spend a day, or even want to take a piece of your own home, here are a number of Art Fairs that will get your creative juices flowing.

Founded in 2008 and previously the Buy Art Fair, the Manchester Art Fair paints itself as one of the UK's "most ambitious" art fairs and offers a look at the world of art outside of London. Now in its second year in the main hall at Manchester Central, a testament to how popular the show has become, you’ll be able to find anything from contemporary paintings to sculpture, from editioned prints to photography, from a range of British and International artists and galleries. Special mention must go to The Manchester Contemporary Section of the fair, which features critically engaged works from emerging artists. Funded by locally based individuals, The Manchester Contemporary Art Fund then gives these artists the opportunity to have their work displayed at the Manchester Art Gallery, creating what Thom Hetherington, the show's CEO, calls “"a new wave of Mancunian cultural patronage".

The fair takes place 11 - 13 October 2019. For more information and to purchase tickets click here

Established as one of the leading retail events for contemporary crafts in the UK and now in its twelfth year, the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair runs from the 10 -13 October. Taking place in the Millennium Gallery of the Upper Campfield Market Hall, this award-winning event features designer-makers and craft artists that have been chosen for their skill and excellence with ceramics, glass, furniture, print, jewellery, interior and fashion textiles. The fair gives you the opportunity to talk to the makers themselves, to learn about the process and discover the inspiration behind their work. Not only do you have the chance to buy directly from the artists, but you can also commission your own unique, handcrafted piece.
